Reading the UV index
The scale runs from 0 to 11 and above. Ethiopia sits close to the equator, so the reading climbs steeply through the middle of the day even when the air feels cool, and it is higher on the highlands because the sun sits more directly overhead.
| Index | Strength | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| 0 to 2 | Low | No protection needed |
| 3 to 5 | Moderate | Cover up, seek shade, hat, sunscreen |
| 6 to 7 | High | Limit time in direct sun around midday |
| 8 to 10 | Very high | Avoid midday sun, use every protection |
| 11 and above | Extreme | Treat direct sun as a hazard |
- These bands follow the World Health Organization scale. Cloud cover lowers the reading but does not remove it, so a cloudy afternoon still needs protection.
